Phase Change in Solids
SUBLIMATION: Solids change directly to gas (skipping the liquid phase)
Ice can sublime under certain conditions. The ice will slowly disappear without turning into liquid first.
Dry ice (which is frozen carbon dioxide) will change directly from a solid to a gas. CO2 (s)gCO2 (g): The solid (frozen) carbon dioxide sublimes into gaseous carbon dioxide
I2 (s)gI2 (g): Solid iodine sublimes into gaseous iodine. There are many Regents questions on this topic.
That’s probably why you’ll sometimes find an icy street clear up quickly without causing wet streets.
