Types of Chemical Formulas
There are three types of chemical formulas:
1. MOLECULAR FORMULA: Shows the true composition (how the molecule appears in real life)
2. EMPIRICAL FORMULA: Shows the elements in the
smallest ratio possible
C6H12O6 is the molecular formula.
CH2O is the empirical formula (reduced formula).
3. STRUCTURAL FORMULA: shows the structure of the molecule and how it bonds
There are many Regents questions on this topic.
Empirical, elf. Elf means a small form. Empirical formula is the smallest form of a formula.
