Solubility and Nature of Solution
• Some solutions dissolve well. Others don’t. • Rule: Like dissolves like.
Polar solute dissolves polar solvent. Polar molecules dissolve in polar solutions. Reminder: A polar molecule is an asymmetrical molecule.
Why won’t CO2 dissolve well in H2O?
CO2 is a nonpolar molecule (symmetrical) and H2O is a polar molecule (asymmetrical).
Nonpolar solute dissolves nonpolar solvent.
Water (a polar solvent) cannot dissolve paint (a nonpolar solute).
Turpentine paint remover (a nonpolar solvent) can dissolve
paint (a
nonpolar solute).
