Surface Area (Rate of Reaction)
How the Surface Area Affects the Rate of Reaction:
• Increased surface area (exposed area) causes an increased rate of reaction. The bigger the outer layer is, the more contact between particles, and
the more place there is for the particles to collide.
• A powder has more surface area than a block or strip, and therefore a
faster rate of reaction.
Granulated sugar has more surface area than sugar cubes, and will have a faster rate of reaction.
• Decreased surface area causes a decreased rate of reaction.
