Proton
PROTON: Positively charged particles in the nucleus of an atom
Location Charge Mass
Nucleus Positive (+1) 1 AMU (Atomic Mass Unit)
• NUCLEAR CHARGE: the electric charge in the nucleus Since protons are positively charged,
the nuclear charge is always positive.
• Number of protons = atomic number of the element.
Proton—pro. Being a pro is a positive
thing. Protons are positively charged particles.
“We’ll soon learn more about AMU, atomic number, and nucleus.”
Every atom of an element will always have the same number
of protons.

“I’m going to try to stay positive until I’m a pro(ton) at this.”
