 Proton
PROTON: Positively charged particles in the nucleus of an atom
Location Charge Mass
Nucleus Positive (+1) 1 AMU (Atomic Mass Unit)
• NUCLEAR CHARGE: the electric charge in the nucleus Š Since protons are positively charged,
the nuclear charge is always positive.
• Number of protons = atomic number of the element.
Proton—pro. Being a pro is a positive
thing. Protons are positively charged particles.
“We’ll soon learn more about AMU, atomic number, and nucleus.”
Š Every atom of an element will always have the same number
of protons.

“I’m going to try to stay positive until I’m a pro(ton) at this.”
