 La Chatelier’s Principle
When STRESS* enters an equilibrium reaction, the equilibrium is thrown off balance. Eventually, the reaction will SHIFT** to reduce the stress and restore equilibrium.
*STRESS: A factor that disturbs equilibrium – such as a change in any of the following:
1. Temperature
2. Pressure
3. Concentration
**SHIFT: Speed up the reaction on one side of the equation and decrease/use up the other side faster.
The word “shift” is interchangeable with: favor, produce more.
But no need to get “stressed” out from this. I’m sure it’ll be explained clearly.
The next few cards will explain these stresses further.
