Concentration as a Stress
• An increase in concentration on one side of the equation makes the reaction shift to the other side. Several steps will happen to restore equilibrium.
A + B⇄C
If we increase the concentration of C:
1. The reaction will shift to the left side. 2. The concentration of C will decrease.
3. The concentration of A + B will increase.
• A decrease in concentration on one side of the equation will make the reaction shift to that side.
A + B⇄C
If we decrease the concentration of C:
1. The reaction will shift to the right side. 3. The concentration of A + B will
2. The concentration of C will increase.
decrease.
