Spontaneous Reactions
SPONTANEOUS REACTIONS: Reactions that occur on their own, without an outside force
Spontaneous reactions can occur with either of these two conditions: 1. Greater entropy (randomness)
gases have highest entropy
When a liquid changes to a gas, entropy increases.
2. Lower ENTHALPY (heat) LOWER ENERGY
This occurs in an exothermic reaction, when the reaction is losing heat.
When the temperature changes from 90°C to 60°C, enthalpy decreases.
