Alternate Acid/Base Theory
The theory is also called ONE ACID-BASE THEORY. • The theory states:
Acids are H+ donors (proton donors).
Giving/ donating
is an ‘A’ thing to
do. Taking/ accepting is more like a ‘B’ thing to do. Acids are donors. Bases are acceptors.
Bases are H+ acceptors (proton acceptors).
• How do you know which is the acid and which is the base in an equation?
The side with the extra H is the acid because it’s the donor. The side with less H is the base because it’s the acceptor.
HCl + H2O H3O+ + Cl-
H2O is the base because it has fewer H’s than H3O. H3O is the acid because it has more H’s.
There are many Regents questions on this topic.
