Neutralization
• Occurs when there’s an equal amount of H+ (acids) and OH— (bases).
• This process forms water (H2O) and a salt (the leftovers
after the H and OH are removed). How?
One H and one OH join to form H2O.
If any elements are left over, they produce a salt.
HCl + NaOH NaCl + H2O salt water
This reaction produced water (H2O) and salt (NaCl).
• When neutralization occurs, the electrical conductivity decreases because the concentration of ions decreases.
Neutral means that things are equal. If there is neutrality in a substance, it means there’s an equal amount of acids and bases.
