Increasing and Decreasing pH Levels
• When the pH increases by 1 unit, the H+ decreases 10-fold.
A solution with a pH of 3 has 10 times less H+ than a solution with a pH of 2.
• When a pH increases by 2 units, the H+ decreases 100-fold.
A solution with a pH of 4 has 100 times less H+ than a solution with a pH of 2.
This is because 10 x 10 = 100.
• When a pH increases by 3 units, the H+ decreases 1,000-fold.
A solution with a pH of 5 has 1,000 times less H+ than the solution with a pH of 2.
This is because 10 x 10 x 10 = 1,000.
• This pattern continues for 4, 5, 6... units
