   Electrolytic Cell
ELECTROLYTIC CELL: Cell used to separate nonspontaneous redox reactions
• This cell needs an outside force (such as a battery) to start the reaction.
• The battery has a positive and a negative side. Š Anode: The side that undergoes oxidation Š Cathode: The side that undergoes reduction
• The two electrodes (anode and cathode) are in the same container of ionic solution. Note: An ox and red cat apply to the electrolytic cell, just as
they apply to the voltaic cell. There are many Regents questions on this topic.
