Characteristics of Organic Compounds
Organic Compounds:
1. Bond covalently (usually nonpolar molecules)
2. Are only soluble in nonpolar substances – because
carbons are nonpolar molecules (Remember: Like dissolves like.)
Organic compounds (nonpolar molecules) are soluble in benzene (a nonpolar substance).
Organic compounds (nonpolar molecules) are not soluble in water (a polar substance).
3. Have low melting points because they have weak bonds
Carbon compounds bond covalently.
