   Carbon Compound Facts
• Most living things are made up of carbon.
• Carbon can form many different types of compounds
Coal, petroleum, diamonds
• Carbon has 4 valence electrons, so it forms 4 covalent bonds.
Š Rule: Therefore, a carbon in a carbon compound diagram must always have 4 lines
coming out of it. This is important!
Š Each line represents 1 pair of shared electrons (4 lines X 2 = 8 electrons)
• Carbon has many different ways of bonding with itself and with others. The bonds form chains, rings, and networks.
