Recognizing Isomers
What IS an isomer?
• An isomer is a compound that has the same number of carbon and hydrogen
atoms as another compound, but has a different structure
• An isomer of a hydrocarbon has a minimum of 4 carbon atoms.
The bigger the compound, the more possibilities for isomers.
The bigger the compound, the higher the boiling point of the compound.
What’s NOT an isomer:
• A structure that is just flipped over. • A structure that is just bent.
