 Naming Hydrocarbon Compounds
How to Name a Hydrocarbon Compound:
1. Count the number of C atoms. Find the prefix (Table P, p. 7). If there are 5 C’s, the prefix will be pent.
2. Check if there’s a double or triple bond.
Š If there are no double bonds or triple bonds, and all the bonds are single, the compound name ends in -ane. Š If the bond is double, the compound name ends in -ene.
Š If the bond is triple, the compound name ends in -yne.
If there are 5 carbons and a double bond between two of them, the compound is called pentene.
3. Check where the double or triple bond is. Write the number before the compound name. If the double bond is between the 3rd and 4th carbon, write 3-pentene.
4. If there’s an “extra piece” to the chain, write the name of that piece first. 2-methyl propane
The number is there to tell you on which number carbon the “extra piece” is on.
