“Extra Pieces” in the Chain
Sometimes, an extra piece is attached to the regular hydrocarbon chain.
Name this structure.
• The regular chain is propane (3 C’s and 7 H’s attached)
• The “extra piece” is attached to the 2nd C in the chain. This piece is an alkyl called
methyl (one C and 3 H’s – one less H than methane).
• Since the “extra piece” is on the second C, we place the number 2 in front of the
compound name. Answer: 2-methyl propane
