• The general formula shows us how the compound will be structured. ‘R’ represents the original carbon atom (before the functional group was added). If the functional group is attached to one ‘R’, then the functional group will
be on the outside of the original carbon chain.
If the functional group is between two ‘R’s, then the functional group is in
the middle of 2 carbon groups.
General formula of halides general formula: R—X (X represents any
halogen).
This means that the carbon chain is drawn and the halogen is attached with a single bond.
