• The general formula shows us how the compound will be structured. ‘R’ represents the original carbon atom (before the functional group was added). Š If the functional group is attached to one ‘R’, then the functional group will
be on the outside of the original carbon chain.
Š If the functional group is between two ‘R’s, then the functional group is in
the middle of 2 carbon groups.
Š General formula of halides general formula: R—X (X represents any
halogen).
This means that the carbon chain is drawn and the halogen is attached with a single bond.
