How to Name a Functional Group Compound
Each class of compound has different rules for naming. However, there are a few general rules that apply to all of them.
1. Write the name of the hydrocarbon. (That’s what we’ve been learning to do until now.)
2. If there are 2 of the same functional group attached to the hydrocarbon, the prefix will be di-.
3. If there are 3 of the same functional group attached to the hydrocarbon, the prefix will be tri-.
A group containing 3 chlorines will be trichloro...
