How to Name a Halide Functional Group
1. Write the name of the hydrocarbon.
2. Attach the name of the halogen to the beginning of the hydrocarbon name,
replacing the –ine ending with ‘o’ (such as: fluoro-, chloro-, brom-, or iodo-).
Name this halide.
1. The hydrocarbon name is propane (3 carbons, single bonds –
Reffy, Tables P and Q (p. 7).
2. Since there are chlorine atoms attached, we add
chloro- to the front of the hydrocarbon name:
chloroplane. ( Reffy, Table R, p. 8 – column #2)
3. Since there are 3 chlorine atoms attached, add tri- to the
beginning of the word: trichloropropane.
4. Now we have to add numbers to indicate which C atom the functional group is attached to.
Since all 3 of the Cl’s are on the first C, we write: 1, 1, 1-trichloropropane.
