How to Name an Alcohol
1. Write the hydrocarbon name and drop the ‘e’. 2. Add ‘ol’ to the end of the hydrocarbon name.
If there are 2 OH molecules added, write diol. If there are 3 OH molecules added, write triol.
Name this alcohol.
1. The hydrocarbon is propane. Drop the ‘e’ to get propan-.
2. There are 3 OH’s added here. So we add -triol to the end of the
hydrocarbon name: propantriol.
3. We add numbers now: 1, 2, 3-propantriol (because one OH is on the
first C, another is on the second C, and another is on the third C).
This is not a base (even though it ends with OH).
