How to Name an Ester
1. Write the hydrocarbon name of the C chain after the O. The word will end with yl (because it is an alkyl).
2. Write the name of the C chain before the O. Drop the ‘e’ and end the word with -oate.
Name this molecule:
1. Methane – methyl (the piece after the O)
2. Propane (the piece before the O) – propan – propanoate
