1. Write the hydrocarbon name and drop the ‘e’. 2. End with -oic acid

1. Ethane – drop the ‘e’ to get ethan- ( Reffy, Tables P and Q)
2. Add –oic acid.
Answer: Ethanoic acid
Reffy, Table K (p. 6) shows that the last common acid is ethanoic acid/acetic acid. This is a weak electrolyte.
Organic acid ends with -oic acid.

to get methan-
2. Add –oic acid.
Answer: Methanoic acid
