Tips For
Remembering Functional Group Rules
1. To remember how a class of functional group looks, just look at Reffy, Table R (p. 8).
2. Ifyouforgethowtowritethenameofthemolecule,lookattheexampleforclues.
If you see that the example for alcohol says 1-propanol, you know that you must write the hydrocarbon name, drop the ‘e’, then add ‘ol’.
3. How do you know if you need to write a number in front of the
molecule name? Check out the examples again.
The examples for halide, alcohol, ketone, and amine show a number in
front of the molecule name. So we put a number in front of the molecules
in those classes.
The examples for ether, aldehyde, organic acid, ester, and amide don’t show
a number in front of the molecule name. Therefore, we don’t put a number in front of the molecules in those classes.
How in the world am I supposed to remember all these functional group rules?
Don’t worry. will help us out.
