   Addition
Addition: Breaking a double or triple bond and adding another compound
• There is no byproduct here because nothing got kicked out. Things were just added.
We start out with ethene, then add Cl2, and we get a new compound without a byproduct. Addition example:
Addition – We add
another compound.
• Addition only occurs in alkenes and alkynes (which have unsaturated organic bonds that can be opened). There are many Regents questions on this topic.
