What makes nuclei unstable?
1. If an atom has an atomic number of 83 or higher, the nucleus is unstable.
2. The proton-neutron ratio in the nucleus is supposed to be approximately 1 to 1. If the ratio is not approximately 1 to 1, the nucleus is unstable.
