At lunch the other day, Lisa, a client of mine, was complaining that she'd had a brilliant idea for an e-book, but someone else "stole" it and created an e- book on the same topic that wasn't as good as hers would have been. This other author had tremendous success with his project, and Lisa felt that he'd destroyed any possibility of hers becoming successful. "That e-book was my one big chance, and he blew it out of the water," she complained.
I said, "I think that was a big chance for you, not your `one' big chance. If you came up with an idea as fabulous as that one, I'm sure you can come up with another."
Lisa looked at me skeptically, and I know what she was thinking: There are no second chances! Well, I don't believe that for a minute. I believe that if we open ourselves up to possibility and trust in the abundant, giving Universe, we'll have 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 3,832nd chances! Look around and you'll see examples of people who reinvented their lives and went from rags to riches to rags to riches again.
"Maybe you weren't meant to write that particular e-book," I told Lisa. "Or maybe you were meant to write it, but in a different way, in your own voice-and it's going to be a much bigger success than you imagine. Or maybe it's not meant to be a book, but a business, a Website, or something else."
I told her about a friend of mine who had been approached by an editor to write a book on a particular topic. She'd created a book proposal that her editor loved, but his boss wouldn't let him buy the book, reasoning that my friend's take on the topic was far too lighthearted and fun, so it couldn't possibly sell in the marketplace. She went on to have a dozen publishers turn the book down before one signed it, and it went on to generate five sequels and sell a quarter-million
