P. 5
9 Will your Advance Directive be followed?
Yes. Medical providers must follow your advance directives to be in compliance with
the Idaho law. A doctor may be unwilling to follow your advance directive for moral,
religious, or professional reasons. If this happens, they must immediately tell you.
Then they must also help you transfer to another doctor or facility that will do what
you want.
10 Can your Advance Directive be changed?
Yes. You can change or cancel your advance directive any time you’d like. Just make
sure that you update your files and medical records with new advance directives.
11 Do you need a lawyer to make an Advance Directive?
In Idaho, you do not have to use a lawyer to write up an advance directive, which
can save money, too. However, if you have questions, consulting with a lawyer would
be a good idea.
12 Do other states accept an Idaho Advance Directive?
Unfortunately, there is no clear answer as it depends on the state. But if you take
your Idaho advance directive with you, chances are medical providers in other states
will be influenced by the choices you’ve outlined, but they may not be required
to. If you spend a large majority of time in another state, you might want to create
advance directives for those states, too.
13 Will an Advance Directive from another state be valid in Idaho?
Yes. An advance directive executed in compliance with another state’s laws will be
valid in Idaho to the extent permitted by Idaho law.
