Veterans Day
by South Brevard Historical Society
If you live or work in Brevard, you see the military
in action. Patrick Air Force Base (PAFB) is bustling with aircraft and helicopters departing and arriving each and every day. All of us have been touched in one way or another with the sacri ces made by the men and women in our military.
November 11, 1919, was the rst commemoration
of Armistice Day. The day was enacted to remember “The Great War’s” (World War I) victory and the bravery of Americans who died in their country’s service. In 1954, the day was renamed Veterans Day to “honor American veterans of all wars” for their willingness to serve and sacri ce for the common good.
To recognize our military this Veteran’s Day, consider visiting Melbourne Military Memorial Park, located at 1601 Oak Street (Melbourne), and the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center (VMC), located at 400 S. Sykes Creek Pkwy (Merritt Island).
Melbourne Military Memorial Park has a garden and meditation bench for each war. The park also has a monument honoring the men that lost their lives while training at the Melbourne Naval Air Station during WII. Brevard Veterans Memorial Center has a great variety of
military artifacts from the Revolutionary War to the current con icts. However, VMC is more than a museum; this 501(c)3 non-pro t organization also maintains a library and funds veteran based programs and support activities. Each person who served in the military, believed that their actions contributed to the preservation of freedom and would return the country, and the world, to peace. The equipment, photographs and journals in museums are a reminder that sometimes great sacri ces are required to preserve our way of life. That we should not forget the cost in both life and treasure that is required is why it is good to go visit museums, monuments and cemeteries that honor the sacri ces of the men and women who have fought and continue to ght so we can live in peace.
The South Brevard Historical Society wants to thank all the veterans, and the men and women currently serving in the US military.
We will not have a program in November. Please visit the South Brevard Historical Society’s website (http://www. southbrevardhistory.org) for information about our future programs, Brevard’s history and other local history related events. SS
