Three friends decided to go deer hunting
together. One was a lawyer, one a doctor, and the other a preacher. As they were walking, along came
a big buck. The three of them shot simultaneously. Immediately the buck dropped to the ground and all three rushed up to see it found that it had only one bullet hole. A debate followed concerning whose buck it was. This is when a game of cer arrived and asked what the problem was. When he heard what it was, ehe of cer told them he would look and tell them who shot it. Within a few seconds the game of cer said with much con dence, “The pastor shot the buck!” They
all wondered how he knew that so quickly. The of cer said, “Easy. The bullet went in one ear and out the other.”
Last month I encouraged readers in the ancient and wise practice of prayer. The real basis for prayer is that there is someone who hears. God hears and our words do not with him go in one ear and out the other.
It’s not a bad idea to go beyond us talking and him hearing to us listening as well. The Bible, as I read it, encourages asking and talking. Within the prayer is also the quieting of our wants and the seeking of God’s presence and God’s will. Both the asking and the listening are simple, simple enough that all of us can
do it. But it does take us giving it a go. There are two times to give it a go, when you feel like it and when you don’t. So however you are feeling, give it a go even today. SS
FOOD continued from pg 21
It seems this is a wonderful trend. So much has been taken away from American Indians over the years. Rediscovering these traditional foods gives people
a sense of pride and history, while at the same time promotes healthier eating habits. Like other foods
that have contributed to the diverse melting pot of the American diet, traditional Native American foods can be prepared using lighter, healthier ingredients and cooking methods.
They can still choose foods that their family has enjoyed for generations, but they need to align them with healthy eating patterns: less sodium, and saturated fat; and more vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Changing one’s diet takes time, but the bene ts are potentially life-saving. Simple changes like cooking with vegetable oil instead of butter or lard, and seasoning foods with herbs and spices instead of salt, can really make a difference. SS
