Victor Harbour Times Report

                                             Goolwa Colts win Grand Final

On a perfect day Goolwa resumed their innings at the Encounter Bay Oval last Saturday

morning chasing Yankalillas score of 70. With the openers George and Baker out and with the
score at 2-13 the odds at that stage were somewhat in favour of the Yankalilla boys. Then
Riddell was caught by Prior off the bowling of Law, followed soon after by the dismissal of A.
fergusson, again by the same bowler. In the meantime, Byrnes who had been holding the fort
was cleaned bowled by D. Edwards and with the score at 5-35 the posiution was deteriorating
rapidly for the riverside lads. Byrnes had made a very valuable 13.

Rosser who was due for a good score did not disappoint, compiling a steady and most
confident innings of 15. Lane, who was to prove one of the heroes of the match, entered the
conflict, only to see the wickets of G.Baker, M.Bartlett, and N. Parker soon fall to the wiles,
accuracy and initiative of the unchanged bowlers Law and Edwards.

When M.Fuller joined Lane the score stood at 9-60. The atmosphre was tense and with 11
runs to make for the last partnership it did seem that Yankalilla might just pull the game out of
        the fire.

But Lane and Fuller thought otherwise, and with keen concentration, and waiting foir the runs
to come, they took the score to 71 amid excitement and "hill" atmosphere of his Goolwa
teammates. Goolwa had won its first Colts' premiership. After reaching the score the match
        became a formality, Goolwa finishing with 9-94 (Lane 22 n.o Fuller 17 n.o)

It had been a great game, neither side giving an inch until a decision had been reached.

The bowling and fielding of the Yankalilla boys had been tight and had made it difficult for the
Goolwa side to penetrate the field. The wicket keeping of Bartlett was outstanding. Law with
3/36 and Edwards 5/31 were the epitome of length, accuracy, concentration and endurance.

Good umpiring by R. Bourman and C.Box was a feature also, and they are to be thanked for
officiating at a match that will be remembered in years to come by the young cricketers.
