everything that he stood for in academia and in Indian economy and society, where he had very strongly held views, that he relentlessly fought for all his life

It is a very sad day for the CDS community. The link shared by Prof Sunil for joining
the condolence meeting is broken. It would be great if it can be reposted.

Professor Vaidyanathan was a great scholar of eminence. Highly productive
and always to the point the scholarly world will miss him. My deepest condolences.

My first reaction when I heard the news this morning was tears. He was a dear friend, one I always thought of with great affection. And I had been wanting to go and look him up in Coimbatore. But now, strangely, I feel a lightness and even gratitude that Vaidi has moved on. His body was giving him enough trouble in the last years to make that something of a relief.
But so many memories from our time at CDS in the 1980s. Vaidi doing his morning rounds of different offices, curious to know what one was working on.... Pulling his bifocals down on his nose so he could scrutinize the register with columns of numbers for which he had an instinctual, almost magical feel...Vaidi chewing cloves and offering them...Vaidi sharp in his questions, always scornful of bombastic theories devoid of empirical referents...Vaidi encouraging, persuasive, ever the teacher and mentor...
