Commands
The Indian Navy operates three Commands. Each Command is headed by a Flag Officer
Commanding-in-Chief in the rank of Vice Admiral.

Southern Naval Command Kochi
Two of the three commands have fleets commander by Rear Admiral, i.e. the Eastern and Western
Fleets, and each also has a Commodore Commanding Submarines. Southern Naval Command is a
training command and includes the Flag Officer Sea Training.
Additionally, the Andaman and Nicobar Command at Port Blair is a joint command reporting to the
Chief of Integrated Services Command (CISC) in New Delhi. The Andaman and Nicobar Command,
a joint Navy, Army and Air Force command was set up in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in 2001.
It was created to safeguard India’s strategic interests in Southeast Asia and the Strait of Malacca.
The Indian Navy plays a major role in patrolling the area with the Indonesian Navy, Royal
Malaysian Navy and Royal Thai Navy. India and Australia signed an agreement to provide maritime
security in the Asia Pacific region.
