Faster, Higher, Stronger, original oil painting by Wyland
In 2008, Wyland was commissioned by the United States Olympic Committee to create a series of official artworks for the Olympic Games in Beijing. Wyland chose to represent the Olympic motto of “Faster, Higher, Stronger” using the spirited image of three dolphins surging through the sea. The image was subsequently represented in sculpture, wall art, and official posters and postcards, with a portion of proceeds from the sale of each artwork going to support U.S. Olympic athletes. The project also set the stage for Wyland’s 100th Whaling Wall, Hands Across the Oceans, a mile long series of 50-foot canvases celebrating the waters of the world. As part of the project, Wyland invited children from over 100 countries to create a global tribute to our blue planet. In fall of 2008, the project was installed at the United States National Mall in Washington, D.C. at the invitation of the Smithsonian Institution to celebrate the grand opening of the new Sant Ocean Hall at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Wyland’s Olympic legacy continued in 2010 when he partnered with the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee to rededicate his famous eight-story mural on Granville Street for the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.
