Welcome
Big animals have captured our imagination for centuries. From the mysterious worlds of sea monsters to the latest discoveries of science, it seems we have an endless fascination with what lies below the surface of the ocean. Of course, many of these questions have been answered, but there is no shortage of interest in why animals in the sea grow so large and how changing environmental conditions affect their future. In this issue of the Ocean Artists Society Magazine, our members share some of their perspectives on these animals through their camera lens and through their words. OAS member Ken Kiefer explains in his Q&A how he turned his childhood obsession with all things ocean into some of the most riveting images on the scene today. Moreover, Ken is sharing his work and experiences with young people in Texas in hopes that they might make future discoveries of their own. In Carolle Ellie’s look at loggerhead turtles, we learn about the plight of these ancient travelers in North Queensland, where the population of breeding females is in steep decline. And finally, we explore the mind boggling scale of the blue whale, a creature once thought to be on the immediate precipice of extinction, but thanks to international action has managed to survive into the new millennium. As always, we encourage your feedback, your submissions, and your support. The OAS is a platform for all ocean artists to share what’s on your mind and in your imagination. We look forward to hearing and seeing more from all of you.
