Module 4: Writing with Fluency and Control Teacher’s Guide.
Objective: Confidence in joining all letters using the dip stroke
  Lesson plan:
Children have now learnt the combinations of letters and have experimented with making up their own letter combinations. This will help the children to apply the rules for joining. There is one area that all children usually require a little more time to master and that is being able to join all the unusual letters together using the ‘dip stroke’. Sheets are avaialble on the IWB programme IWB405/406.
1. Using the practice pages available in the appendix on page 48-51 ask the children to pay attention to the joining of letters: e, r, v, w, o, x and z.
2. In order that the children are not struggling with the spatial placement of letters initially use the Hemispheres Illustrated Paper, so children have more
visual support.
3. Once they feel confident on the Illustrated Paper ask children to ‘have a go’ at writing the words on normal lined writing paper. See if they can apply the
rules without visual guidance in regards to the helicopter line.
More to Learn:
Support:
If children are struggling to locate the helicopter line on lined paper ask them to take a ruler and draw in the helicopter line before they start. This will reinforce the spatial position for them.
To supplement the learning use the preprinted practice page in the appendix, on pages 48-51.
