P. 29
WE HAVE MET BEFORE
TUESDAY 26TH OCTOBER 2010 the linesman not signalling for the goal but the referee
is adamant and, despite a late chance for Russell from
FA CUP 4TH QUALIFYING a City free kick, it was the lower ranked side who
ROUND REPLAY progressed into the first round in a thrilling match.
BATH CITY: Ryan Robinson; Joe Edwards,
BATH CITY 3-4 SWINDON Jim Rollo (c), Gethin Jones, Sido Jombati; Scott Murray
(Danny Webb, 46), Adam Connolly, Adie Harris
SUPERMARINE (Marc Canham, 46), Alex Russell; Hector Mackie
After a largely forgettable 0-0 draw in the first game (Lee Phillips 79), Darren Edwards
on the Saturday, City would have felt confident of Subs not used: Giancarlo Borhy, Callum Hart,
progressing in the familiar surrounds of Twerton Park Joe Burnell
in the Tuesday night replay. With the two division gap
between the sides, the visitors were very much the SWINDON SUPERMARINE: Mark Scott, Kyle
underdogs, despite the replay earning draw extending Lapham, Leigh Henry, Gary Horgan, Matt Robinson;
their run to just one defeat in 14 matches. Ben Wells, Chris Taylor (c), Chris Allen, Nick Stanley;
Jamie Gosling (Luke Hopper, 89), Ashan Holgate
As if to perhaps signal their attacking intentions, (Steve Cook, 82)
it was Supermarine who began brightly and Nick
Stanley drove an effort wide from 25 yards with just Subs not used: Danny Allen, Sam Morris,
three minutes on the clock. A minute later, the same Justyn McKay, Dave Bampton
player had better fortune as, after former City man Attendance: 665
Jamie Gosling danced past Jim Rollo on the left, his
in-swinging cross was flicked home by the unmarked ADAM MATRAVERS
Stanley to give the visitors the lead. However, City
responded immediately to this set back and were back
on level terms within two minutes as Scott Murray saw
his free kick headed in off the upright by Sido Jombati.
After Alex Russell for City and Ashan Holgate for
the Wiltshire side both went close, it was City who
forged ahead on 21 minutes when Adam Connolly
saw his 18-yard drive zip through a crowd of bodies
and Mark Scott in the Supermarine goal was well
beaten. 2-1 became 3-1 on 33 minutes as Swindon
Town loanee Scott got in a mix-up with defender Kyle
Lapham, and Hector Mackie took full advantage
heading home.
The visitors then twice went close in a breath taking Swindon Supermarine celebrate at the final whistle.
game before they did hit back on 41 minutes, when
Matt Robinson headed home Ben Wells corner.
Unbelievably, the scores were level at the break as,
from another corner, poor defending from City allowed
Leigh Henry`s soft far post header to go all the way in.
Ten minutes into the second half and from another
corner, the lower division side almost stole a shock
lead when Lapham`s header produced an instinctive
save from Ryan Robinson in the City goal. Chances
continued at both ends as Stanley and Gosling
went close for Supermarine, while Darren Edwards
inexplicably fired over from eight yards after Russell`s
cross fell invitingly for him.
With ten minutes remaining, yet another set piece
caused chaos for City as Robinson failed to claim
and Gosling saw his follow-up shot well saved by the
City stopper. With the clock showing 91 minutes and
extra time looming large, Chris Taylor delivered yet
another deep Supermarine corner where Lapham rose
unmarked to head in off a defender and the crossbar
to give the visitors a 4-3 lead. City were furious, with Kyle Lapham netted a late winner to give Supermarine a 4-3 FA Cup giant killing.
