A Personal Experience with Celtic Music
As the Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates the Celtic
Spirit concert this weekend, Board Member John Emler shares
the inspiration behind his deepened appreciation for Irish
music. John’s recent trip to Ireland added a personal and
enriching layer to the cultural experience we’re about to share.
In March 2023, John attended a benefit concert for the Phil
featuring Eileen Ivers and her incredible band. The performance
was nothing short of mesmerizing, prompting John to want to
immerse himself even further in the world of Irish music. This led him to sign up for a
weeklong Irish music tour in April 2024, where he had the opportunity to travel with
Eileen, her husband Brian, and their son Aidan.
John’s trip took him on a scenic journey along the famous Irish Wild Atlantic Way, a
stretch of coastline known for its breathtaking views and rich history. But the beauty
of the landscape was only part of the experience. Each day, John and his fellow
travelers were treated to traditional Irish music performances in some of the most
charming and authentic settings imaginable. Concerts were held in local pubs, in
the castles where they stayed, and even amidst the serenity of the Irish countryside.
What made the trip truly special, however, was the chance to spend time with Eileen
and her family. Beyond the music, John was struck by Eileen’s warmth, generosity,
and her ability to share the joy of Irish culture with everyone she encountered.
“Eileen’s talent is extraordinary,” John says, “but it’s her love for humanity and the
way she connects with people through her music that makes her truly unique.”
The tour not only deepened John’s love for the music but also strengthened his
connection to Ireland’s cultural heritage. For him, the experience was a reminder
of the power of music to unite people, regardless of where they are from or what
language they speak.
Tonight’s Celtic Spirit concert is a
reflection of that connection—where
Eileen Ivers, her band, and the Plymouth
Philharmonic Orchestra come together
to celebrate the rich and lively tradition
of Irish music. With its high-energy
performances, this concert is a chance
to experience the passion and spirit of
Ireland in the heart of Plymouth.
John’s journey to Ireland has further
fueled the excitement for this event,
and we hope it inspires you to
experience the joy and energy of Celtic
music, just as he did on his travels.
