Message from the Board Chair
Welcome to the opener of the Phil’s 107 season! It is truly remarkable how this
th
great organization has withstood the test of time and keeps getting better every year!
We are thrilled to present American Favorites with music that has won the hearts of
audiences from coast to coast. The orchestra begins with Colonial Dance by Florence Price, who is the
first woman of color whose music was played by a major symphony orchestra. Next is a famous piece
by George Gershwin, Rhapsody in Blue, featuring our guest artist, pianist David Freeman Coleman. The
closing piece will be Symphony No. 2 by Rachmaninoff which will make you feel a range of emotions. I
can say with confidence that you are in for a real treat to begin this season!
I would like to give high praise to our Executive Director, Kim Corben, who continues to work incredibly
hard with planning, organizing, leading, and controlling the Phil enterprise so wonderfully and our Music
Director, Steven Karidoyanes, who continues to be so inspiring and successful conducting our orchestra.
Lastly, the Phil remains extremely thankful and grateful to its dedicated staff and musicians, volunteers,
members of the board, and you. You are all the best!
Sincerely,
Kevin R. Kiley, Board Chair
From the Executive Director
Welcome,
Thank you for joining us for opening night. What a season we have in store for you!
Our 107 season is filled with such variety. From tonight’s beautiful concert with music
th
from Price, Gershwin, and Rachmaninoff to the music of the Beatles and James Bond films. There are so
many reasons to come back to the concert hall. And, there is still time to get a subscription. Simply pick
3 (or more) concerts from the 10 different programs offered and you’re in! Everything you need is on our
website.
None of the work we do would be possible without your help and for that, we are sincerely grateful.
Even when our concerts are sold out, ticket sales only cover 50% of the cost to produce the concerts
– that’s how all major orchestras work. This means that we must raise over $500,000 each year to
continue our mission of inspiring, engaging, and entertaining through the power of live music. Thank you
to our sponsors and donors for stepping up year after year to help fill that gap.
All of us at the Phil are committed to bringing our community together to enjoy wonderful music. Can you
think of a better way to spend your evening than together in the concert hall enjoying beautiful music?
With gratitude,
Kim Corben, Executive Director
