Program Notes

Two Worlds, One Land is a concert that honors the living story of the Wampanoag
Nation who live among us and upon whose land the town of Plymouth resides. This
concert program was several years in the making.

In 2018 the Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra partnered with the Cape Cod Symphony
to commission two new works in observance of the Plymouth 400th commemoration in
2020: Mayflower by Alex Berko and Wampanoag: Stories for All Time by Tonya Wind
Singer. That concert was initially scheduled for performance in November 2020 – but
the pandemic lockdown cancelled that performance. We felt this music was too
important to not present, so we rescheduled it for January 2022. Then, if you recall,
Mother Nature threw a blizzard at us on our concert weekend and that performance
      was cancelled, too.

This incarnation of Two Worlds, One Land includes many elements from the original
program. Unfortunately, the guest artists crucial for the performance of Wampanoag:
Stories for All Time have schedules which conflict with our August concert date. We
are committed to presenting this music with our Wampanoag performance partners,
lead by narrator/singer/storyteller Jonathan James Perry, at a future date. As our way
to show continued commitment to the composer who created Wampanoag: Stories…,
we asked Tonya Wind Singer to provide us with another musical selection which would
be appropriate for this program. I’m sure you will agree, her Creation fills the bill nicely.

                                                       -- Steven Karidoyanes

Prayer and Celebration from Powwow Symphony Brent Michael Davids
                                                                  (b. 1959)

Writes the composer about his music:

Prayer and Celebration is a revised version of the final two movements of
Powwow Symphony, rewritten especially for public radio’s A Prairie Home
Companion and broadcast from Indiana in November 2005. The full work,
Powwow Symphony, was commissioned in part by the New Mexico Symphony
Orchestra with the gracious assistance of Ralph Berkowitz, and supported in
part by Djerassi Resident Artist Program, and the Rockefeller Foundation.
