Program Notes
were in the news during Borodin’s whole life.
His Polovtsian Dances from the Act II finale were orchestrated by Rimsky-Korsakov and Lyadov for an 1879
concert, and the sections heard today entertained the captured Prince Igor. They were featured in the first
Paris season of Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, influencing Ravel’s dances for Daphnis and Chloe. The original
choral texts sung to these tunes call for strength, solidarity, and finding hope in the winds of the southern
prairies, echoing lost Ukrainian, Jewish, Greek, Russian, and nomadic Cuman voices. The orchestra tonight
performs instrumental versions of the Choral Dances.

WHY IS MUSIC THE ANSWER FOR YOU?
The Phil is more than an orchestra—it’s a community.
This season, we’re celebrating the people who make it so
special and sharing their unique connections to music.

Favorite Music Memory
All of the Plymouth Philharmonic classical concerts are
memorable. However, recently, the artist’s rendition of Blue
Bayou brought me to tears. I’m a big Linda Ronstadt fan, and
we saw her in concert many years ago.
