About the Phil
The Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra (the Phil) is a premier nonprofit
cultural institution in Massachusetts and the Orchestra-in-Residence with
the Town of Plymouth at Memorial Hall. Dedicated to artistic excellence
and community enrichment, the Phil offers world-class performances,
innovative outreach programs, and strong community partnerships.
The Phil’s mission is to create music and educational experiences that
engage people of all ages and from all walks of life because we believe
music inspires curiosity, enables connection, and provides joy. The Phil
performs to critical acclaim, premieres works by leading composers, and
collaborates with world-renowned soloists.
The orchestra is comprised of professionally trained musicians who come
from diverse academic backgrounds and a variety of countries, bringing a
world-class level of precision, skill, and dedication to every performance.
The Phil is a major cultural force in southeastern Massachusetts. Beyond
its concert season, the Phil presents a wide range of live music and
educational programs for people of all ages and backgrounds. Working
with educators, leaders, and community partners, the Phil reaches well
beyond Plymouth, serving as an innovator and advocate for music for all.
Now in its 111th Season, the
Phil played its first concert on
December 28, 1913, under the
organization and imagination
of G. Herbert Clarke, a Kingston
violin teacher with a passion
for music and a vision of
shared musical fellowship and
community. With the exception
of two years during World War
II, the orchestra has been in
chartered nonprofit corporation
and experienced a period of
significant growth in both
programming and support.
