Boy this will be something to talk about at school. The second grade is not to talkative at least we
don’t know what we are talking about.

I think it was in the summer of 1952 when we moved from Ransom Street to Downey. Dad found a
house there, on a half acre that was in studs. Ron thinks the dad moved it in there, however, I talked to
Aunt Helen (Mom's sister) and she said no. I do know that there are a lot of trees on the lot. Avocado, Plum
and some other kind of trees. Dad would set us up on down on Florence Boulevard to sell them, after we
picked them. We would sell the fruit to people that pass by. When we got bored and hungry we would eat
some of the fruit. I found out I didn't like our kind of Avacoyo's and the Plums (SatSumma) gave you the
runs. We learned dad would order up some water, from somewhere, and water came out of waterports
down in the ground. They would send it down the water piping and you'd open up the door and the water
would come out and flood the place. I guess there used to be, and still was, a lot of growing stuff around
there because there were a lot of orange trees

Early in 1967, the Navy forces assigned to MARKET TIME and other operations were being
stretched thin. As a result, the Navy requested that the Coast Guard provide five high endurance cutters
(WHEC) for duty with the Coastal Surveillance Forces. On April 24,1967, Coast Guard Squadron Three was
formed at Pearl Harbor. Two days later the squadron sailed from Pearl Harbor and arrived at Subic Bay on
              May 10.
Ultimately 30 high endurance cutters served in Squadron Three during its existence from April,
1967 through January, 1972. The Navy assigned the cutters to the Gulf of Thailand for 5"/38 gunfire
support of Ong Doc as well as logistic support to patrol boats. Squadron Three operated from bases in Da
Nang, Cat Lo and An Thoi. The USCGC GRESHAM ON MARKET TIME was designated the flagship. As
flagship of the newly-formed Coast Guard Squadron Three, the
Gresham lead the five-ship convoy west from Pearl Harbor to the Philippines. From Subic Bay, after
last minute briefings and additional training, the cutters sailed on to Vietnam and Market Time patrols."
