UNDERSTANDING LEDs
TERMS & DEFINITIONS
Light-Emitting Diode (LED): A semiconductor
device that emits visible light when an electrical current
passes through it. An LED is oten small in area (less than
1mm ) and integrated components may be used to shape
2
its radiation pattern.
Lumen (lm): A measurement of light emitted by a lamp. Old Wattage Lumen Conversion

Watt (W): Measures the amount of energy required to of brightness in lumens 40W 450 lumens
light the product. 60W 800 lumens
(not watts) before your 75W 1100 lumens
Lumens Per Watt (LPW): Also called lumen eficacy, bulbs become obsolete. 100W 1600 lumens
LPW measures light delivered per watt. 150W 2600 lumens
IESNA LM-79-2008: An industry standardized test
procedure that measures the performance qualities of QUICK TIP:
LED luminaries and integral lamps, which allows for 1 watt produces approximately 100 lumens (or light)
a true comparison of luminaries (regardless of light
source).
LED LAMPS: The Lighting Facts Label
Patterned from the nutrition
labels on foods, this label will
give you important information
on the lamp you are purchasing.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
passed legislation that requires a
lighting facts label to be included on
lamp packaging. The lighting facts
label feaured on all lamps is intended
for general service purposes, including
LEDs. The program helps ensure
that manufacturers are presenting
true and accurate information as
it relates to product performance.
