 First Generation Student Resources
Cost of College/Financial Aid
 ● Issues
○ Without scholarships and Grants, a lot of first generation students may struggle
with tuition, room and board.
○ Another financial issue they may have is limited resources especially during a
pandemic. ● Solution
○ Harvard Financial Aid Initiative (HFAI): This financial aid initiative has increased the number of students from lower income backgrounds and simultaneously added to the number of first-generation students at Harvard. And HFAI supports students not only through generous financial aid but also through special programs like the Student Events Fund, the Winter Coat Fund, and community events like the popular HFAI dinners. They are located at
  Harvard College
University Hall
Cambridge, MA 02138 a nd
Harvard College Admissions Office and Griffin Financial Aid Office 86 Brattle Street

● Issues
○ First gen students may feel out of place with other students and might suffer from
depression, anxiety or even imposters syndrome.
○ Another issue could be that they could have trouble making friends or finding
people similar to them. ● Solution
○ Harvard Primus: is a student organization that seeks to ease the transition to college, to build a strong and supportive community, and to provide a voice for first-gen students.
