A visit to the north of the region brought the entourage to see the “Granite Rose”
and shows how this area has evolved over time. The rocks are amazing and nature
has played its part in carving images which are subject to interpretation. One might
see!
The culinary delights and good wine finished off every evening and were entertained
by a large group of singers who chanted out seafaring songs.
A good old “knees up”. The French hosts were very impressed with “The banks of
my old Lovely Lee” sung in Irish, English and French. Joe Mac Coitir initiated this
with aplomb and love of the Irish language.
It is not just about the exchange of “ coming and going” every two years. It is
about weaving and strengthening the links of these two towns. It is a testament
of this strong link which now celebrates its 35th year. It was an immense honour to
have three original members of the group; namely Mr Michael O Mahony, a for-
mer Town Clerk and his wife Joan. In fact, they have never missed an exchange.
Amongst them was also Mrs Mary Hennessy. Their continued support to the “Twin-
ning” was acknowledged by Shirley Walkin, President of the Association.
A special thanks to Cllr. Sinead Sheppard, Cllr. Cathal Rasmussen. Cathoirleach: Mr
Padraig O Sullivan and Municpal District Officer: Mr Paraig Lynch. The association
acts on their behalf as caretakers and are at this present time working out a suitable
location of the signage (Cobh twinned with Ploermel).
Shirley would like to avail of this opportunity to welcome new members to the
group. Speaking the language is not a pre-requisite, as on both sides we have a
language that transcends namely, Friendship, Respect and Goodwill to keep this
alliance active. However classes for members are organised for “Every day spoken
French”, little expressions that you might not find in your text book.
