               Missing from This

e are routinely asked about certain knots and
W hitches that are conspicuously missing from
our courses, and they are also missing from this book.
Some climbers will discover pet applications of these
knots, but they have not proven themselves to be the
most useful in a career of rock climbing.

             Bachmann’s Hitch

While the Bachmann’s is a favorite hitch for those
climbers who routinely travel on fixed ropes, it does
not excel in that task in any particular way. Its fans
love the way the carabiner inside the wraps of the
friction hitch create an easy-to-find release for slid-
ing the friction hitch along a rope. That carabiner can
only be moved in one direction, however, and it is
easy to destabilize the hitch simply by grabbing the
enwrapped carabiner. In total, the Bachmann’s wins
a place in many climbers’ hearts, but it is a hitch than
can easily be done without. It neither grabs more
