Resident Tutors
Resident Tutors serve in the College as teachers in their specialised areas, and as mentors for
students. Their role is an important part of ensuring the safety of the College and its students
outside of office hours. They also share in offering pastoral care to students – which forms an
integral part of the network which supports students in residence – and are a communication
pathway between students and day staff.
The role of a Tutor is to be a part of the students’ support system as they go through significant
moments in their lives during their time at the College. The early years of university can be a
challenging time in the lives of students, and a range of significant issues may emerge. Mentor
meetings (both one-on-one and in small groups) with Resident Tutors are a great opportunity for
you to discuss how the transition to university and collegiate life is going, and seek guidance in
any areas relating to studies, university, or living away from home. Tutors are able to direct
students to appropriate internal and external support. During one-on-one mentoring sessions,
tutors may fill out a check-in and goal setting proforma with students. This document is shared with
the Deputy Principal to assist with timely and holistic community wellbeing support.
Generally, however, any conversation you have with a Tutor is confidential unless you agree for
the conversation to be discussed with other relevant staff members, or unless someone is deemed
to be at risk of harm.
All Resident Tutors possess formal First Aid and Mental Health First Aid qualifications, and have also
undergone training as First Responders to disclosures of sexual assault. They are supported by the
Deputy Principal and Dean of Studies in their roles.
