Most people who have developmental disabilities can run, laugh, fly a kite, and enjoy a picnic. As adults, many hold jobs, go to movies, and visit their neighbors. But even people with mild developmental disabilities are vulnerable, because they learn slowly, are easier to deceive, and less likely to grasp many of the complexities of modern life. They might not be able to balance a check- book, drive a car, compare prices at grocery stores, follow a recipe, or find a job on their own. Devel- opmental disabilities include down syndrome and several conditions that can (but don’t always) pro- duce similar results: cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism. Other neurological disorders similar to down syndrome are also considered developmental disabilities. One of the defining characteristics of developmental disabilities is that they last for life. There is no cure for down syndrome, autism, cer- ebral palsy, or other neurological conditions that impair intellectual functioning. This means that people with developmental disabilities are likely to need special supports throughout all stages of life; as infants, toddlers, children, adolescents, adults, and as a senior citizens. A developmental disability by definition is, present before the age of 18, and is expected to last a lifetime.
