 SIDE EFFECTS AND CONTRAINDICATIONS
Essential oils are a therapeutic modality and there is a risk of side effects with their use. The most common side effect experienced is dermatitis or a skin reaction (Tisserand, 2020). Skin reactions can occur with anyone, but inappropriate dilution is the leading cause of this issue (Tisserand, 2020). As previously outlined essential oils should never be applied undiluted (neat) to the skin (Tisserand, 2020). Several essential oils such as clove, lemongrass and cinnamon bark are known to be dermal irritants, due to this the maximum dermal application concentration is quite low (Tisserand, 2020).
Along with dermatitis it is possible to experience allergic dermatitis, a situation involving the immune system (Tisserand, 2020). If an individual experiences allergic dermatitis they should avoid contact with that essential oil indefinitely (Tisserand, 2020). Initially allergic and contact dermatitis will display similar symptoms (redness, itching, swelling etc.) but, contact symptoms will resolve relatively quickly once the oil is removed (Tisserand, 2020). Whereas, allergic symptoms can result in hives, burning or pain and redness that lasts for several days to weeks (Tisserand, 2020). Unfortunately, allergic responses may not occur with the first or even second exposure to an essential oil, continual assessment and reassessment after application is necessary. Spot testing should also be completed at least twice to try and ensure that an adverse reaction will not occur.
Anaphylaxis
ANAPHYLAXIS IS THE MOST EXTREME ALLERGIC REACTION AND REQUIRES EMERGENCY MEDICAL ATTENTION
For individuals that are scent sensitive or have asthma essential oils could aggravate the condition. Migraines and headaches are a common side effect experienced by individuals with scent sensitivities, but some individuals could have a severe allergy that results in anaphylaxis after inhalation (most commonly seen with citrus aromas). For individuals with asthma certain aromas and chemical constituents could induce
